Length of Training: 4.5 Days (35 hours)

Course Objective(s):

The success of a criminal prosecution begins with a thorough and effective investigation. This course will give new detectives and criminal investigators a comprehensive review of their responsibilities in an investigation and the broad array of issues and factors that must be taken into account as the investigation proceeds. It provides practical approaches to overall investigations, witness interviews, suspect interrogations, and preparing a case for successful prosecution. This week-long course examines procedures for a wide range of criminal activities, from injury and death investigations, to sex crimes, to financial and other property crimes. Participants will be involved in practical exercises and review case studies of actual crime investigations.

Upon completion participants will be able to:

• Take command of the crime scene • Protect and gather multiple types of evidence • Conduct a preliminary inquiry • Recognize Fourth Amendment considerations and exceptions • Assess injury and death cases • Classify types of homicides and suicides • Evaluate autopsy information • Identify motives for crime • Recognize deviant sexual behavior and paraphilia • Perform supplemental investigations • Access appropriate resources • Conduct successful lineups • Identify and address fraudulent complaints • Recover stolen property • Conduct interviews and assess witness reliability • Perform interrogations while protecting suspect rights • Build a stronger evidence-based case for prosecution

Must be sworn law enforcement to attend this training.  MN POST credits of 35 hours.
