COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Method of Instruction - Basic Instructor Development Training Course is a thirty-two (32) credit hour police training course that provides instruction on adult learning, instructor competencies, classroom strategies, communication skills, instructional delivery, use of technology in a classroom, and assessment of student learning outcomes. Classes meet over a period of 4 ½ days.

To receive a course certificate, students will be required to demonstrate effective training skills during a ten-minute presentation. Enrolled students should plan a training topic prior to class and expect to construct a lesson plan and teach that topic. Students will be completing both oral and written presentations during this training program. All students must successfully complete all work assignments, including homework, and all other components of this training program within the time allowed. Students are expected to be punctual for all class meeting times and assignments.

Computers are essential to the effective completion/participation within this course. Students are required to bring their own laptop or department issued laptop. The laptops should be equipped with Microsoft Office capabilities (MS Word and MS PowerPoint). Prerequisites: Applicants must have at least three years of satisfactory experience as a law enforcement officer as a pre-requisite for this course. Re-Certification: There is no re-certification requirement for this program.

INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL: To give the student officers the necessary knowledge, skills, and ability to plan, document and implement criteria based adult training in a given topic of expertise. To plan, develop, and write training objectives; to develop and write lesson plans, to develop training aids, to build and maintain good presentation skills and to define evaluation and testing methods.
